Across the country, many communities mark August 18 as a day to recognize volunteer firefighters and the vital role they play. Though not a federally designated holiday, this a time to recognize the individuals who step forward without hesitation when their communities need them most. Volunteer firefighters give their time, their strength, and often their safety to protect others. Their dedication reflects the very best of community service. Today, we thank them and their families for the sacrifices they make and the lives they touch.
