Henry Barnaby Jr., 89, passed away peacefully at his home on June 21st surrounded by the love of his family and friends following a full and active life defined by curiosity, kindness, integrity, and devotion to those he loved.

Henry was preceded in death by Martine (Tisserand) Barnaby, his beloved wife of 60 years. Together they built a life centered on family, food, fun, friendship, and community. Their love remains an enduring part of their legacy which includes their children: Henry Barnaby III and his wife, Karen; Christine Barnaby and her son Paul Kerin; Jennifer Barnaby and partner Pierre O’Farrell; Marc Barnaby and wife Tabatha, their daughters, Grace and Julia, and great-granddaughter, Lainey, Martine C. Barnaby, her husband Dave Schmidt, their children, Gabrielle and Adin Sawyer and Ben and Anna Schmidt. Henry leaves behind extended family, dear friends, former patients, and many others whose lives were enriched by his kindness and friendship.

Born in New York City, Henry was a graduate of Columbia University and began his career as a dentist in the U.S. Public Health Service. He was stationed in a number of settings and cities across the U.S. but spoke most fondly of his time in Arizona where he provided care for and learned from the Navajo and Hopi people on the reservations in the early 1960s.

Henry went on to establish a dental practice in the Town of Maine where he developed meaningful friendships and associations in the community. He believed in doing what was right,  treating everyone with kindness and respect and never drawing attention to the fact that he had done it. He offered honest advice and was someone family and friends could always turn to for wisdom and guidance.

Henry was instantly likable because he had a charming and playful demeanor. He expressed interest in others and loved telling stories and hearing about people’s lives and experiences.

Whether hosting holiday gatherings, telling a favorite joke for the hundredth time, or striking up a conversation with a stranger, he left people smiling. His quick wit, playful flirtations, love of all types of music and classically unique dance moves became part of his unmistakable charm.

A lifelong learner, Henry approached the world with curiosity. He immersed himself in new hobbies and subjects, becoming an expert on everything from organic gardening and cultivation of indoor houseplants to wood carving, wine making, and aquarium fish. He loved exploring new interests, mastering new skills, and sharing what he learned with others. He found joy in understanding how things worked, delighted in sharing what he knew, and encouraging others by giving them the confidence to discover their own passions.

He cherished both lively company and peaceful solitude, equally content in a room full of guests or quietly pursuing his latest interest in silence. He was generous with his time, compassionate toward those in need, and fiercely independent.

To his grandchildren, he wasn’t simply a grandfather—he was “Papa,” a constant source of wisdom, laughter, unconditional love, and unforgettable stories. The values he lived by and the memories he created will continue to shape the lives of those who knew him.

Henry leaves behind a legacy of laughter, learning, honesty, and love that will continue to grow through his children, grandchildren, extended family, friends, patients, and the many lives he touched. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

His family will host a celebration of life for Henry and Martine on September 19, 2026, from 1-4 at The Riverdale in Endwell, NY.  Friends, family, and community are welcome.
